Last-Minute Own Goal Sinks 9-Man Liverpool in Dramatic Premier League Showdown Against Tottenham

In a breathtaking climax to Saturday’s Premier League face-off, a beleaguered Liverpool—down to just nine players—suffered their first defeat of the season at the hands of Tottenham Hotspur. The high-stakes duel, part of the league’s seventh round, ended in a 2-1 victory for the Spurs, thanks to a devastating own goal from Liverpool’s Cameroonian defender Joel Matip in the 96th minute.

A cloud of controversy hovered over the match, as Liverpool was the victim of multiple questionable refereeing decisions. The most glaring was a disallowed goal from Colombian striker Luis Diaz in the first half, which replays showed should have stood.

The game saw its first goal from Tottenham’s Korean forward Heung-Min Son, equalized by Liverpool’s Dutch player Kody Khakpo, as the first half came to a close. The Reds faced a mountainous task as English midfielder Curtis Jones and Portuguese forward Diogo Jota were shown red cards, reducing the team to just nine men on the pitch. Despite the numerical disadvantage, Liverpool were on the brink of salvaging a crucial point until Matip’s own goal altered the course of the game in its dying seconds.

 

With this dramatic victory, Tottenham has catapulted to the second position in the Premier League standings, just one point behind league leaders Manchester City.
