Lightning Strikes

At least six women and one man were killed and three others were injured in lightning strikes in two districts in Yemen’s western coastal province of Hodeidah, according to medical and local sources.

The strikes occurred in the districts of Lahj and Zahra, which are controlled by the Houthi rebels.

Dr. Hamza Saeed, who works at a hospital in Lahj, said the victims were all outdoors when they were struck by lightning.

“We received six women and one man, all of whom were dead on arrival,” Saeed told AFP. “Three others were injured and are in stable condition.”

Floods

In a separate incident, a woman was killed and dozens of homes were destroyed in floods in the nearby district of Hays, which is controlled by Yemeni government forces.

A local official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media, said the woman was swept away by floodwaters while trying to cross a river.

The floods also damaged roads and bridges in the area.
