A recent study has revealed that text-generating AI systems, like the renowned robot ChatGPT, consume approximately half a liter (500 milliliters) of water for every 20 to 50 questions posed by users.
Shauli Ren, a researcher from the University of California, stated in a research paper that while this quantity may not seem substantial on an individual basis, the widespread use of text-generating AI systems such as ChatGPT could result in significant water consumption.
Reports suggest that the growth in water consumption is primarily linked to the development of artificial intelligence systems, with Microsoft being a major contributor through its involvement with OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT and other AI technologies.
Microsoft has acknowledged the importance of this issue and expressed its intention to develop solutions to reduce water consumption and carbon footprint associated with AI systems, the company is also working on methods to measure energy consumption and environmental impact.
It’s worth noting that ChatGPT relies on Microsoft’s servers, which require freshwater for cooling purposes and maintaining an appropriate operating temperature efficiently.
While water consumption in AI system servers may decrease over time, raising awareness about the issue and taking corrective measures are crucial for preserving water resources and the environment.
