Apple unveiled its smartwatch, the Apple Watch Ultra 2, during its annual event, this new watch comes with all the features that users love in the Ultra version, along with the powerful new S9 chip with a System in Package (SiP) design, dual-tap gesture, a brighter display, expanded altitude range, Siri integration, precise iPhone tracking, and advanced water sports capabilities.
The Apple Watch Ultra 2 operates on watchOS 10, which offers redesigned apps, a new Smart Stack feature, and new biking experiences for outdoor activities, it also features a new watch face called “Modular Ultra.”
In addition to all these new updates, the Apple Watch Ultra 2 maintains the same battery life, lasting up to 36 hours with regular usage and up to 72 hours in low-power mode.
For the first time, customers can choose a carbon-neutral option for their Apple Watch, marking a significant step towards Apple’s 2030 goal: a plan to make its supply chain and the entire lifecycle of its products carbon-neutral by 2030.
The Apple Watch Ultra 2 is available for pre-order now and will be in stores starting from Friday, September 22nd.
The powerful new S9 SiP chip:
The Apple Watch Ultra 2 features the custom Apple silicon powerfully integrated into the all-new S9 SiP chip, this chip offers system-wide improvements and entirely new features, including the dual-tap gesture and on-watch Siri, it also provides secure and private access to health data.
Additionally, the Apple Watch Ultra 2 boasts a quad-core neural engine capable of processing machine learning tasks twice as fast as the original Apple Watch Ultra.
Double Tap Gesture:
The Apple Watch Ultra 2 introduces several innovative features that make using the watch more convenient and user-friendly, these innovations include the Digital Crown, the haptic feedback engine, as well as gestures like tapping, scrolling, wrist raise, and covering the watch to mute it.
Users can easily control the Apple Watch Ultra 2 with the new double-tap gesture using one hand, without the need to touch the screen, they can press with their index and thumb fingers together using the hand wearing the watch to perform various common actions quickly and effortlessly on the Apple Watch Ultra 2.
The double-tap gesture can also be used to open the new Smart Stack feature in the watch interface and to access tools within it by repeating the double-tap gesture.
The double-tap gesture controls the primary button of any app, allowing it to be used to pause a timer, play or pause music, set an alarm snooze, answer or end a phone call, take a photo with the iPhone’s camera via the Apple Watch, or switch to the new altitude level display feature in the Compass app to show the relative altitude of saved waypoints.
The new double-tap gesture relies on the ultra-fast neural engine in the Apple Watch Ultra 2, which processes data from the accelerometer, gyroscope, and optical heart rate sensor, it uses a new algorithm for machine learning.
The algorithm detects the unique signature of movements and subtle changes in blood flow when using the index and thumb fingers for the double-tap gesture, the double-tap gesture will be available in a watchOS system update next month.
A Brighter Display:
The maximum brightness of the Apple Watch Ultra 2’s display reaches 3000 nits per square meter, thanks to its advanced new screen structure, this represents a 50% increase compared to the first-generation Apple Watch Ultra, making it the brightest screen ever from Apple, it enhances visibility even in bright sunlight.
The screen brightness can be reduced by just one nit per square meter in dark rooms or early mornings to avoid disturbing people nearby, the flashlight also benefits from the new screen structure, as rotating the Digital Crown temporarily doubles the brightness to illuminate the path better.
Modular Ultra Watch Face:
The new Modular Ultra watch face, designed for the Apple Watch Ultra model, takes advantage of the large screen size, it uses the outer edges to display real-time data, including seconds, altitude, or depth.
The watch face showcases most of the features found in any Apple digital watch face, allowing customization to fit various sports, outdoor adventures, and water sports activities.
Ready for Tough Conditions:
Apple has designed the Apple Watch Ultra 2 to withstand harsh conditions and has tested its use at higher altitudes than any other Apple product, ranging from 500 meters below sea level for exploring the deepest valleys to as high as 9,000 meters to reach the towering mountain peaks around the world.
This includes recreational diving and free diving:
The design of the Apple Watch Ultra is considered perfect for water sports, including more challenging and strenuous activities like windsurfing and water skiing, as well as recreational diving up to 40 meters, and free diving with the new +Oceanic app from Huish Outdoors.
The built-in depth app now allows users to save a record for each session, so they can review their latest dives on the Apple Watch Ultra or access the complete log of dive times using GPS in the Fitness app on the iPhone.
During free diving using the +Oceanic app, users can access important data such as depth and elapsed time, they’ll receive alerts about the target depth, all displayed in large and clear text for easy viewing.
Between dives, heart rate zones help users monitor and work on lowering their heart rate, Pre-set alerts, such as surface time and session elapsed time, guide users through each training session, while the detailed log provides a comprehensive record including descent and ascent rates.
Siri Feature with Health Data Access and Logging:
For the first time on the Apple Watch, Siri requests can be processed on the watch itself, for requests that don’t require internet information, such as starting an exercise or setting an alarm, Siri doesn’t rely on Wi-Fi or cellular networks, resulting in faster and more accurate responses, the powerful neural engine improves spelling accuracy by 25%.
The processing on the watch prioritizes privacy and security, Siri can now be used to access health and fitness data from the Health app, for example, users can inquire about their sleep duration from the previous night, their progress on closing activity rings, or start a running or biking workout outdoors, they can also issue voice commands to set waypoints using Siri without an internet connection.
Users can also use Siri requests on the Apple Watch Ultra 2 to log their health data, such as weight, body temperature, menstrual cycle, or current medications.
Precise iPhone Tracking:
The Apple Watch’s ability to find an iPhone is a beloved feature among users, now, the new S9 chip with System in Package (SiP) in the second generation of the high-bandwidth chip supports precise tracking in iPhone 15 models equipped with the same chip.
The Precise Tracking feature provides guidance on distance and direction, along with visual, tactile, and audible instructions to locate a misplaced iPhone, even if it’s in a different room or if the user can’t remember where they placed it, for example, after a diving session.
