Honolulu, Hawaii – Kilauea volcano, one of the most active in the world, erupted for the third time in 2023 on Sunday afternoon. The eruption is currently contained within the crater of the volcano, but authorities have raised the alert level to “warning” and the aviation code to “red.”
The eruption began at around 2:00 PM local time, and was accompanied by a series of earthquakes. Footage from webcams at the volcano showed cracks opening up in the crater floor, from which lava began to flow.
Officials say that the eruption poses no immediate threat to populated areas, but they are warning residents to avoid the area due to the risk of exposure to ash and other volcanic gases.

Kilauea is located on the Big Island of Hawaii, and is part of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. The volcano is known for its frequent eruptions, which have caused widespread damage in the past.
In 2019, a series of earthquakes and a major eruption at Kilauea destroyed hundreds of homes and businesses. The volcano also erupted in January and June of this year.
Authorities are monitoring the situation at Kilauea and will continue to provide updates as needed.
