Google is gearing up to quietly phase out its popular app that allows users to purchase Hollywood movies and premium television shows.
Users of Android TV received an email notification from the internet giant, informing them that the “Google Play Movies & TV app will no longer be available on your Android TV device starting from October 5, 2023.”
Instead, users will be able to buy or rent movies through the “Shop” tab on Android TV, with the content also available via YouTube and Google TV.
Some users expressed surprise at the announcement. One user on social media said he was “extremely sad,” while others mentioned that the app “was garbage anyway” and suggested that Google decided to discontinue it because they couldn’t convince anyone to watch the content it offered, according to the British newspaper, Daily Mail.
According to the publication, many customers may not even notice the difference, especially if they own the latest Google TV devices like Chromecast, which is a media streamer that allows users to play content such as videos and music on a digital television.
Similar changes have already been made on smartphones, where the Play Movies & TV app on Chromecast has been replaced with “Google TV.”
